When I had just bought my first DSLR camera Tash dragged me into the sport of her chosing: rollerderby. Within a month I became a photographer for the Calgary Roller Derby Association. After moving to Germany I never quite found the time again, but at least I shot a few albums worth of German roller derby.
While the Berlin Rollergirls did pump up their game a bit since last year, the Rocketz really roll some wicket derby..

One of the first rollerderby games that I shot in Germany was the game between Berlin and Kassel on the 26th of June 2016. The second league Berlin lassies showed a much better performance than just a month earlier.

On the 26th of June 2016 the Saskatoon Mindfox played a hangover (morning) bout against Calgary's B52 Bellas. Rogue promised me lots of falls before the game, and she did not disappoint.

25th of June 2016: in preparation for the Roller Derby Mens World Cup The Calgary Allstars (ladies) played an exhebition bout against Team Canada Men. The ladies never had a winning chance, which made all the points they scored so much more amazing.

The Chinook City Roller Derby hosted their 2016 tournament Flat Track Fever from 27th to 29th of May 2016. The lighting was suboptimal, which, incombination with my aversion towards strobes led to a rather inferior quality of my photographs. They are still nice to look at, though.
Again, there is one gallery behind each picture, because I shot thirteen bouts total.
14th of May 2016: the very last May Meltdown, organised by the Foothills Rollerderby Association, was an absolute blast. The organisation was great, the derby action even better, and the lighting was just perfect. These may remain my best derby shots for a long time.
There are four galleries in this post, so every image is linked to a different one.
On the 17th of April 2016 the talented Avalanche City Roller Girls from Fernie visited Calgary, and battled the CRDA East Side Wheelers. The Wheelers where no match for Fernie, but they tried some interesting strategies, and quite obviously the technique of Avalanche City made this match an absolute derby feast.

Apparently I have been promoted to the official photographer of the Calgary Rollerderby team Jane Deere, and even though this is only my second attempt at shooting sports, my photos are mostly interesting, and start to capture the joy and elegance of this amazing sport.

Most of this footage was shot for a music video that I made. I joined the Calgary Rollerderby team Jane Deere for some of their practice, and for their game against the Gas City Rollers (Medicine Hat).
